My friend just moved back to the states from Brazil, where he taught English as a second language. Obviously he speaks Portuguese quite well. While I was attempting to lose him as a friend by introducing him to anime, he brought up a legend about "arigato"
He said that the Portuguese had a fair amount of trade with Japan, and the word obligado (oh blee gadu) was adopted into the Japanese language and evolved into arigato.
Is it true? I don't bloody well know, but it's a nice story.
As for as easing him into anime, so far I have lucked out with Daily Lives of High School Boys, but I'm on episode ten, so I need to come up with something next. D-Frag is too "yelly", I think, and Nichijou is too, umm, I don't know, but it is too that.
I don't want to go into long term stuff like Vandread or Geminar yet, and I want to stay with comedy for now. Maybe Moyashimon?

Comedy is a hit and miss and difficult to hit. Impossible with any surety, really. That said, I had a decent success with light titles like Midori no Hibi.

Thanks for the recommendation, Pete. I will give the series a look. I have seen so many series that wouoldn't work. Sayonara Zetsobu Sensei, Tatami Galaxy and even, I think, FLCL are acquired tastes (at least for the genre).

Ben-To! maybe? I just realized exactly how few pure comedy series I actually like...

There are some rom com series that might work, but you need to make an investment in them. Mikakunin de Shinkoukei, or Bokura wa Minna Kawaiisou come to mind. Way too early for harem, even Tenchi Muyo.
He's a voracious reader and a Conan Doyle fan (loved the new BBC Sherlock series so far), but I was more into philosophy that he was (hence my reluctance to do with Ergo Proxy). He was okay with the first episode of Eden of the East, but I really want to stay with comedy for now.
I was thinking about Ah! My Goddess or Shounen Onmyouji (sp?), but those are at least 24 eps. each.

I kept going back to this.
He played Axis and Allies in the eighties (I think that is what it was called). Played other board war games since he was a kid. What did I know? Stratego. Not him.
When home PC games started to get interesting, we played Panzer General often. He conquered the U.S. His big saying to me was "Blitzkrieg, not sitzkrieg!"
Then he'd kick my ass.
Big WWII history buff. Understood the importance/difference of bore, diameter and barrel length. Knows when they came out. Would love some of of your posts. (all y'all)
"What else does your friend like? "
It's settled then. Girl's und Panzer it is. Gives me an excuse to open my new copy from Bob.

I remember this as being a wonderfully fun show, but it's been years since I last watched it. It's not strictly a comedy, however... there's some dead serious bits in it.

Besides, what's the big necessity?
I would just show something like J2, and if it goes well, then proceed onwards. Garupan is not a bad choice too. I didn't like it for being too cartoony, but it may be just the ticket for some.
